Here are some surface photo's from the Dowgang Hush. This is just behind the entrance of Caplecleugh Mine. These are a set to let you see what is up there. The Hush is one of the oldest methods of working veins. What you do is you find a area where you think there is a vein on the hill side. You build a dam above said vein and when the dam is full of water, you let the water out a quickly as possible. this has the effect of washing away the material covering the vein and exposing it so you can work it. Galena being heavy does not move very well in water and tends to stay put. You repeat this many times and you will get a feature like Dowgang hush. The Dam in the pic's would have been for the mine crushing plant in Nenthead village
